Eye surgery is the surgery done on the eyes to help improve eye sight or any issue that affects the eyesight.
Types of Eye Surgery
There are many types of surgeries available for treating eyes from surgical to cosmetic surgeries. And they are:
• Cataract Surgery: Cataract generally occurs in people who are over the age of 60. There are three types of cataract surgery and they are:
o Phacoemulsification is done under local anesthesia. By using an inserted probe the cloudy lens is dissolved using ultrasonic vibration.
o Extracapsular Cataract Surgery is used for lens that is too dense and Phacoemulsification cannot help.
o Intracapsular cataract surgery has a large incision made so the lens and the surrounding capsule can be removes completely. This treatment is one of the least types used of the three.
• Corrective Surgery: an estimate is nearly 2000 corrective surgeries are done across the world daily. The reason for corrective surgery includes correcting astigmatism, myopia and hyperopia. There are two treatments that are used and they are:
o LASIK or Laser Assisted in Keratomileusis which is used to remove the present corneal tissue and reshape the tissue giving better sight.
o PRK or Photorefractive Keratectomy is used when the cornea is too thin and the flap cannot be made.
• Glaucoma Surgery: Glaucoma is the cause of losing sight as the intraocular pressure is raised. Though the vision loss cannot be completely resolved, nevertheless the pressure can be reduced. Glaucoma surgery can be done with two methods:
o Laser surgery: A Laser is used to make a small incision so the fluid can flow out of the eye.
o Conventional surgery: In this surgery a new drainage canal is made.
• Lid Repair Surgery: Lid repair surgery is both a functional and cosmetic surgery as it involves the repairing of the eye lid.
• Orbital Surgery: If you are suffering from issues like evisceration, anophthalmia and enucleation than you will be suggested to undergo orbital surgery.
